I was surprised to discover that the default theme did not have any kind of favicon importer.  A bit of research lead me to discover that I had to add the code myself.  That’s odd, no?  It seems like pretty basic functionality.

Anyway, for future reference, here’s how to install your own favicon:

In your Dashboard under Appearance, click on Editor.  Then on the right of the page, select “Header” (also known as “heading.php”).  Scroll down a bit and add this line to the code:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="<?php bloginfo('template_directory'); ?>/favicon.ico" />

You can add it right after the line that starts with:

<link rel="stylesheet" ......>

Hit save.

Then you go to your website directory and find the wordpress folder where your themes are located.  Drop a favion.ico file in the folder for your active theme and you’re all set.

While I really liked the Sliding Doors theme, for the life of me, I couldn’t find out where you upload the site’s favicon and other blog theme pictures.  I’m going to take a step back and see what the default theme has to offer.  Maybe I can adjust it to look like the Sliding Doors Theme on my own.

Now I’m up to the point where I need to customize my blog.  The default theme is way too boring and must be changed immediately.  I went to the appearance tab and looked through all the free themes.  Most of them are quite basic but there are a few interesting ones under the photoblogging tag.  The problem is that it’s hard to tell what it will look like when there are so few posts up.

The current theme I’m using is called “Sliding Door”.  It seems to be a good compromise between photo oriented posts and ones that are more text based.

I’m going to have adjust those slides to categories of my own but at least I have some bones to my blog now.
